RUGBY: Trowbridge 46 Oakmeadians 7
6:00pm Tuesday 11th September 2012 in Sport
FORMER Bath and England star Steve Ojomoh saw his reign as Trowbridge coach get off to a magnificent start as the home side ran in eight tries at Green Lane.
Trowbridge – with Ojomoh and Dan Smith at the helm – turned on a stylish display to wrap up a bonus-point triumph with ease.
Their high-pace game tore into the visitors and scores came at regular intervals from wing James McFarlane, Ashley Chalk, who crossed twice, scrum-half George Leat with a superb solo effort and Barry Coombs. Lloyd Davis added a conversion for a half-time lead of 27-0.
An injury to number eight Nick Lawes resulted in a team reshuffle with Adam Sullivan going into the pack and Kyle Knight coming on as replacement.
Inevitably in the heat, the pace dropped off a little in the second half although the new rolling subs law was used to good effect.
Further tries came from centre Steve White and Chalk, who completed his hat-trick as Davis added a conversion.
Oakmeadians got some reward for their enterprising play with a try from Peter Davis converted by Tom Keir.
But Trowbridge completed the scoring with a final try from Knight, converted by Davis.
Meanwhile, new captain Rhys Davis saw his Trowbridge side fall to defeat in their tricky Dorset & Wilts One North opener at Avonvale.
With several of last season’s colts making the step up to senior rugby, Trowbridge made apositive start, forcing a series of penalties.
Davis missed one shot at goal and Avonvale took advantage of confusion at a drop out to score the opening try.
Trailing 22-5 at half time, second row Roy Hewitt scored for the visitors in the second half.
