SPENCER Moulton endured mixed fortunes at the Wiltshire Men’s Championship finals and Bowls Wiltshire Competition finals held at Devizes last weekend, writes DAVE EATON.

The Bradford on Avon club contested six finals, but only took the plaudits in three on Saturday and lost all three on the Sunday.

Moulton took the honours in the Tourist Trophy against Chippenham Town despite only winning on one of the two rinks. The big win from Graham Shadwell’s quartet enabled Moulton to win on aggregate 48-39

They also won the Bowls Wiltshire mixed double rinks cup when taking the honours in both matches as they defeated Avon 45-30.

Marcia Hartley completed a Moulton treble when winning the county ladies unbadged singles competition.

She beat teenager Joanna Richman (Wootton Bassett) 16-9 in the semi-finals and then defeated Bev Lilley (Devizes) 16-8 in the final.

On Sunday though, Moulton’s good fortune deserted them completely.

In the men’s national fours championship final, the rink of Tony Keating, Ashley Keirl, Russell Francis and Graham Shadwell had to give second best to Westlecot’s Graham Hatherall, Ian Jefferies, Mike Jackson and Mel Biggs going down 23-12 after 19 ends.

Francis then moved onto the next rink to play Hatherall in the men’s national two wood singles championship, losing 17-8. He completed an unwanted hat-trick as Moulton failed to overturn favourites Holt in the Four Rink League.

Elsewhere, Trowbridge Westbourne duo Tom and Georgina Newman finished as runners-up in the Bowls Wiltshire U21 competition while Avon’s Jean Buckland lost in the county ladies unbadged semi-finals to Bev Lilley (Devizes) 15-10.
