GIRLS FOOTBALL: Beaten Supermarine miss out on top spot

SWINDON Supermarine Ladies were unable to to take advantage of Swindon Spitfires’ lack of action as they failed to take top spot in South West Women’s League Division One East.

Cam Bulldogs’ decision to resign from the league meant Spitfires were without a fixture, but Supermarine failed to swoop as they lost their 100 per cent record after losing 2-1 at Bishop’s Lydeard.

Spitfires’ reserves did manage a game, though, and notched their first win of the season as a hat-trick from Katie Wadey saw them beat Highworth Town 5-2, with Lisa Curtis and Caroline Hook also finding the net to secure the victory in the Wiltshire League.

Also in the Wiltshire League, Spitfires Under 12s won 5-3 at Frome Town Ladies Youth thanks to goals from Georgia Brown (3), Gipsy Viveash, and Hollie Timbrell.

Also winning on their travels were the under 11s, chalking up an 11-1 win at FC Chippenham. Emily Purvis led the way with five goals while Sian Barber got a hat-trick, Morgan Ly Culley netted a brace, and a solitary effort from Courtney Gleed completed the rout.

The Oxford Girls League got underway at the weekend, with Spitfires’ Under 14s chalking up an opening 10-0 win at Highworth Town Juniors. After a tightly contested opening five minutes Spitfires took the lead the when Chiarna Deller broke down the wing and hit a precision shot past the outstretched keeper. Amy Connaghan made it 2-0 as a result of pressure on the Highworth centre back, whose subsequent back pass was intercepted and slipped under the advancing keeper. Highworth came close to making it 2-1 but Serenn Sanghera cleared the ball from danger, before Charley Reynolds made it 3-0 as a result of a lob over the keeper from outside the area.

Again Highworth rallied and Harriet Maxwell was forced to put in some keen interceptions in support of a strong performance from Kaylee Allan in midfield, and as the half developed Katie Dellow became more influential down the wing interplaying with the forwards. Spitfires closed out the first half with a fourth goal as a result of a powerful effort from Kat Reynolds.

Danni Granato made it 5-0 as a result of an interception from a goal kick and finished off the opportunity in clinical fashion, and she soon struck again to make it 6-0 by latching onto a through ball and drilling home past the oncoming keeper.

Connaghan made it 7-0 with an individual goal before Granato completed her hat trick, again breaking the defensive line as a result of another great through ball.

Connaghan joined the hat-trick club with another deadly timed run, and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 9-0.

The final goal came as a result of a fierce corner which the keeper could not hold, and Abby Fuller finished off the loose ball to complete the game with Spitfires winning 10-0.

Spitfires Under 13s also kicked off their season with a win, with goals from Hannah Pearce, Katie Donovan, and three from Abbi Knights securing a 5-0 victory at Bloxham.
