BOWLS: Box Ladies fall short

WILTSHIRE representitives Box Ladies missed out last weekend in their bid to win the Women’s National Top Club Championship title for the first time at Royal Leamington Spa.
Three times in the past four seasons, when this competition was held at Torquay, they had reached the final stages (last eight) finishing fifth in 2008, and then third in both 2010 and 2011.
But once again Box Ladies fell short this year, going out 3-1 in the quarter-finals to Wigton (Cumbria) who went on to lift the crown, beating Croydon (Surrey) in the final 2.5-1.5.
In their match with Wigton in the last eight Box only took the honours on one of the four disciplines, with Lolly Braddon, Jean Collier and Sue Cooke winning the triples 18-16. They lost in the singles, pairs and fours disciplines.
RESULTS
Singles: Janet Hardie lost to Christine Wharton 7-21.
Pairs: Karen Funnell & Alex Jacobs lost to Jackie Bewley & Kath Baxter 14-20.
Triples: Lolly Braddon, Jean Collier & Sue Cooke beat Lesley Pedlar, Anne Dalziel & Penny Peile 18-16.
Fours: Molly Manning, Judy Selbie, Sue Dix & Carol Grenfell lost to Eve Hutton, Elvera Walters, Jeannette Bell & Nicola Bowe 17-22.
Score: Box lost to Wigton 1-3.
