RUNNING: O’Brien is the first winner

SWINDON Harriers’ Gary O’Brien won Sunday’s inaugural Persimmon Homes Malmesbury Half Marathon.

O’Brien completed the course in one hour, 16 minutes and 19 seconds – over two minutes clear of Simon Meare, of Swindon Striders.

Matthew Young was third in 1:18:50, while in the ladies’ race, Wootton Bassett Hounds’ Sam Kelly took the win in 1:29:52, followed closely by Nicola Denning (Cirencester AC) in 1:29:59 and Sudbury Joggers’ Louise Hampshre (1:32:13).

Also completing the course was Rifleman Daniel Parrack, who was badly injured by a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan in 2009.

The High Wycombe-based competitor completed the course on his hand bike in 1:52:31, part of his training for a five marathons in five days challenge he has set himself next year.
