SWINDON’S Wessex 3rds squash team got off to the perfect start in the new Wiltshire Winter League on Tuesday with a stunning 5-0 victory over Devizes 2nds.
With both teams having moved up to Division Three, Wessex team captain Paul Maddison had admitted to being doubtful of their chances against a team who finished top last season.
Playing at home, Andy Heavens got matters off to a great start with a confident 3-1 win over Devizes’ Harry Hislop.
Dave Hutton’s set against Wayne Edwards was a thriller to watch and anything but easy, despite also being decided by the fourth game of the set.
Next to step up was Josh Watkins, the youngest member of the Wessex team at 15, who pulled out the most dominating performance of the night by punishing Rob Daise 3-0.
Maddison followed suit with a 3-0 win over Paul Fennings and although the match was already won, the pressure was still on for Neil Marshman as he attempted to complete a whitewash.
Marshman looked in great form as he took the first two games against Martin Vaughan, only for the Devizes man to fight back and steal the third.
The fourth turned into a real battle, but Marshman’s determination and skill helped him bring the game back and eventually win 9-7.
The result gave Wessex a maximum 19 points as they head away from home next week to take on Chippenham Olympiad 2nds.
