CHIPPENHAM’S fine start to the National Three South West campaign continued as they battled to victory in Buckinghamshire.
Jason Forster’s men, who ended Redingensians 13-month unbeaten league run the previous week, battled back from a half-time deficit to scored three tries after the break.
Fly-half Harry Taylor cancelled out an earlier Amersham penalty on 15 minutes, but the home side took the interval lead with an unconverted try.
The visitors upped the ante after the break and scrum-half Lewis Surry weaved past the defence for their opening try, Taylor kicking the conversion.
A second Amersham try tied the scores once again but, on the hour, concerted pressure from the Chippenham pack brought its rewards as the referee awarded them a penalty try that Taylor converted.
Amersham drew to within two points with their third, unconverted, score but, despite losing John Boddington to a yellow card, Chippenham extended their lead as Rupert Crockett touched down.
As Amersham pressure built, Kam Vuadrey was sin-binned for an illegal tackle, allowing the hosts to reduce arrears with a penalty.
But despite intense home pressure, the visitors held on in the dying moments.
