DAN THE FAN: Square pegs in round holes are not helping us

A month after the worst away performance seen under Paolo Di Canio at Preston, we got to experience the worst home display under his reign on Tuesday night.

At Shrewsbury on Saturday, Town were much the better side and deserved to win through Simon Ferry’s goal.

But a couple of days ago Town fans and some unfortunate neutrals sat through 94 minutes of pain at the County Ground.

Apart from his man of the match performance against Oxford on his debut, Federico Bessone has had a poor start to his career at Town.

That continued on Tuesday with some woeful defending but, in some fairness to him, Di Canio still insists he plays out of position as a right back, with Joe Devera sitting on the bench.

Devera had a terrible last couple of games, but at least he has experience in that position.

Also I don’t understand why Di Canio continues to play Alan Navarro and Tommy Miller in central midfield together. Ferry is as important to the first XI as Matt Ritchie. He needs to play every game.

The injured Nathan Thompson has been a big miss, especially to Ritchie, who has had no one to link up with on the right, which left him struggling.

We have to get back to winning ways quickly against bottom side Bury at Gigg Lane on Saturday.

Just like Colchester, Bury have appointed a new manager – Kevin Blackwell – recently, so will put in a better performance to impress him.
