England recorded one of the biggest victories in their entire history on Sunday when they thumped Panama 6-1 at the 2018 World Cup.

The Three Lions had never scored more than four in a single game before at the finals but had bagged five by half-time as they advanced to the last 16.

Here Press Association Sport looks at five of England’s most handsome wins.

England 13 Ireland 0 – February 18, 1882

England reached double figures on a few occasions in the earlier days of international football but their biggest victory remains the 13-0 demolition of Ireland towards the end of the 19th century. Aston Villa forward Howard Vaughton had an international debut to remember in Belfast, scoring five of the goals.

The 1980s brought a number of huge victories for England – with Turkey twice beaten 8-0 – but the biggest of all came against Luxembourg in qualifying for the Euros in 1984. Luther Blissett led the way with a hat-trick while there were also goals for Glenn Hoddle, Phil Neal and Steve Coppell among others. The final 9-0 scoreline was a repeat of the victory England recorded over the same opposition in 1960.

While this might have been another handsome victory against minnows, it is remembered for the goal England conceded on another disappointing night for the nation. After just 8.3 seconds David Gualtieri put San Marino ahead with what was his country’s third ever goal. England went on to win this final group game handsomely – Ian Wright scoring four – but they failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, with boss Graham Taylor resigning shortly after.

Unsurprisingly, San Marino have been on the wrong end of a number of thrashings from the Three Lions. England’s biggest victory against the microstate came in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers when they scored eight against a San Marino team occupying the lowest ranking in the world at the time. Jermain Defoe was the only player to score more than once, though, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney among the other scorers.

England 6 Panama 1 – June 24, 2018

Gareth Southgate’s young side obliterated their previous record World Cup finals win in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday. Harry Kane and John Stones each scored braces while Jesse Lingard fired home from range to leave England 5-0 up at half-time. Kane completed his hat-trick after the break and though Panama’s Felipe Baloy claimed a consolation, Southgate’s side made a statement of intent with their biggest ever win on the grandest stage.
