Tears of joy for Rosco as Robins claim title

CRYING GAME: Robins boss Alun Rossiter CRYING GAME: Robins boss Alun Rossiter

THERE were tears in the eyes of team manager Alun Rossiter as the Swindon Robins ended their 45 year wait for topflight glory in style at Poole last night.

The Robins had the title wrapped up by the end of heat 12 at Wimborne Road as they beat Poole 95-89 on aggregate, capping a magnificent season as they bounced back from finishing bottom of the pile in 2011 in the best way possible.

Swindon lost out 45-44 on the night, but all that was forgotten as the champagne corks flew at the end of heat 15, bringing the club’s long wait for glory to a magnificent end.

Proud Swindonian Rossiter tasted success with Coventry in 2010, but admitted winning the league with his hometown club tasted even sweeter as the ghost of 1967 was firmly put to bed.

“As a team I hope we are all going down in history now, and it is an amazing feeling,” he said.

“We have finally done it and I am just so proud, and it is as sweet as I thought it would be.

“I thought it was amazing to win with Coventry in 2010, but this is even more amazing now because I have won it with my hometown club.”

Rossiter believes his side will go down in history after their success, and was full of praise for everyone connected with the club.

“We are not talking about 1967 anymore, we are talking about the class of 2012 now,” he said.

“I am really pleased and all the boys have been amazing, the riders, the mechanics, everyone.

“Gary (Patchett, co-promoter) went through the mill with the team here last year and it was really tough, the Robins were down the bottom and everyone had a hard time.

“But I have come back and look what has happened, there is something right with the chemistry.

“Swindon were last at the end of last season and now we have won the league, and it is an amazing achievement.

“It is all down to the riders because they are the ones who have made it happen, and I have just helped along the way.

“We have done the town proud, and it is an amazing achievement.”

Rosco came back to Swindon a better Team Manager and, I would suggest, a better man too.
Well done Al, I know how hard you have worked for this and the effort that you have put in. Enjoy the celebrations and the congratulations.

People do care and care passionately. How sad that such small minded people choose to knock what has been a great achievement that has taken much, much hard work.
If you don't care thats fine, but what is going on in your life that so sours you to wish to spoil others happiness?
I feel sorry for you.

What a miserable git you are. A massive well done to everyone associated with the Robins and a special thank you to Ashley Holloway for helping Steady achieve Grand Final winning couple of performances. I was there and I can tell you, I have yet to come down from cloud 9. In what other sport can you mingle and mix with the stars afterwards in the bar so freely? Also a mention to Neil Middledtch, who took the defeat like the gentleman he is!

anybody seen the stark contrast of the speedway and football teams coverage in the Adver , robins had 3 pages today,if the town win anything its half the paper

The Adver have long disappointed when it comes to their Speedway coverage. The slightest utterance from the Italian bloke on the roundabout and its half a page plus pictures.
Maybe they'll have some better coverage with better pictures tomorrow?

Why bother posting then you stupid B'stard. This sport is unreal and the riders risk their lives every time they hop on a bike and deserve all the praise they can get and there are many fans that follow the sport. You just stay in the warm in your 9-5 job and just wonder what it would be like to have a life.

Well done Roscoe and the boys you have done Swindon proud.

Well said mikek. I am just disappointed we have no chance to celebrate this at a proper meeting. Ok there is a dinner and dance at the DE vere but this is not my cup of tea. I loved the winning but it feels already like it has come and gone with no fuss or chance to celebrate at the Abbey

Yes totally agree it all seems like a damp squib. Some posters of the footy forum have mentioned the idea of Roscoe and the Riders and a couple of bikes being at the sold out Villa game next Tuesday which would be brilliant and Roscoe is a keen Town fan anyway. I do think though the moment is going to be sadly missed for the speedway fans to celebrate with their heroes.

fantastic achievement to lay the ghost of 67. Well done to all, including the Promoters who are long suffering contributors to this sport.

Speedway at its best is still fantastic entertainment and this Town does it well. Long may it reign.
