Daniels puts focus on defence

BACK-ROWER Paul Daniels says Swindon can still improve at the back following their 59-31 victory at home to Bletchley on Saturday.

The Greenbridge Road side were thumping winners on their own turf courtesy of tries from Charlie Vine (3), Sam Wells (2), Mike Thompson (2), Jordan Sheppard and Daniels.

Fly-half Adam Westall added seven conversions to ensure the margin of victory was even greater.

But ever the perfectionist, Daniels admits tweaks in defence will make the Wiltshire outfit a more fearsome proposition.

“We put 100 per cent into attack and sometimes that leaves us slightly tired in defence,” he said.

“To concede that many points to a club that low in the league wasn’t good enough, and that was the only disappointment.

“I think we could have scored two or three more tries ourselves and to be honest that would have been a fair reflection of the game.

“It was a good result, even if the performance wasn’t what it should have been.

“I sort of fell over the line for my try, but I will take that.”

The result meant that Swindon move to six wins out of eight in South West 1 East and are fifth in the table.

And Daniels added that he is happy with the team’s progress ever since they won promotion to the division the season before last.

“We’ve got a lot of strength-in-depth in the first team,” he said.

“Last year surprised me slightly how well we did, but the higher we get the better it suits us.

“The lower you go the more scrappy the games are, but at our level it’s quicker and that’s the game we’re trying to play.

“There’s no reason this year why we can’t learn a trick or two and finish in the top four again, or even the top two.”
