SWINDON College Old Boys manager Martin Peaple says Greig O’Brien will soon be back in the position he knows best after returning to rugby following nearly three years out.

A knee injury kept the combative centre off the field of play for a prolonged spell before he made his comeback in Old Boys’ 19-17 defeat to Hungerford on Saturday.

While the result might have been disappointing, O’Brien’s return to the fray in the final quarter of an hour was a bright spot, the converted wing immediately scoring before setting up Luke Wills for another as his side mounted a late comeback.

O’Brien could be involved once more tomorrow as Old Boys make the journey to strugglers Littlemore in the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier, and Peaple explained that long term he wants to see O’Brien back in his former position.

“(Before Saturday) the last time he played was at Stow-on-the-Wold three years ago,” said Peaple.

“We’re making sure he warms up properly and does all the right things, but changes in the substitutions this year have benefited those sorts of players.

“Rolling subs are allowed now so If he doesn’t feel right then we can take him off and treat him and then put him back on.

“Once his confidence grows, which is one of the main things after an injury, we’d like to see him come back into the centre.”

Old Boys might be missing James Murray, Stu Catherall and Stuart Knight for tomorrow’s clash but Peaple is confident of victory and more.

“Littlemore seem to be languishing at the bottom of the table and haven’t had some great results,” he said.

“Although we’ve got one or two unavailable this week, I’d still fancy our chances to get a result up there and hopefully a bonus point.”

Elsewhere in local action this weekend, Minety go in search of their second league win of the season when they travel to Devizes 2nds, while Marlborough welcome Avonvale in the same division.

In Dorset & Wilts 2 North, Fairford will continue their chase of table-toppers Sutton Benger as they face visitors Wootton Bassett 2nds.

Cricklade, who have four wins out of five so far, entertain Swindon College Old Boys 2nds.
