FRESH from their superb 5-1 success over The Lamb in their previous game, Worton & Cheverell visited another of the Division Two promotion hopefuls on Saturday afternoon.

And once again Paul Spearing’s side showed their worth as they held the villagers to a 4-4 draw, but they would have believed at 3-1 and 4-3 up the points were their for the taking.

Worton went in front on 16 minutes through Luke Chant but they were pegged back in the 32nd minute with Chris Storey scoring to restore parity.

Worton regained the advantage two minutes before half time, Scott Stroud putting them 2-1 up courtesy of a stunning 35 yard looping strike.

After the break both teams toiled as Worton looked to extend their lead and Bratton fought to get back on level terms and when Kieran Dickinson scored from the penalty spot on 67 minutes to put Worton 3-1 ahead it should have been curtains for Bratton.

That wasn’t so as Shane Newman halved the deficit on 71 minutes and eight minutes later it was game on as Ben Mead and dragged Bratton level at 3-3.

Worton got their noses back in front on 82 minutes, Myles Hickton finding the net and just as it was looking as if they were about to claim another famous win, Dale Rowland on his Bratton debut denied them victory, earning his team a share of the spoils with a delightful finish that saw an eight-goal thriller end all-square at 4-4.

Broughton Gifford 2 Steeple Ashton 3

IT WAS bottom versus top at the Common where hosts Broughton Gifford welcomed leaders Steeple Ashton, who were bidding for a double over their hosts having beaten them 4-2 just four weeks ago.

Ashton duly obliged by claiming a 3-2 win with all the five goals coming in a very entertaining first half.

Rafal Whitcher saw his opener for Ashton cancelled out by Ben Forester and when James Dark put Broughton ahead an upset was on the cards.

However Broughton’s hopes were dashed when the unfortunate Gary Turk put through his own net to make it 2-2 and their dreams turned into a nightmare when Gary Collins scored what proved to be Ashton’s winner on 41 minutes.

Calne Eagles 0 Melksham Town A 2

AFTER winning their first three games of the season, Calne Eagles were probably thinking that this could be their season.

But since that promising start Roy Wenham’s side lost four on the spin, with the last three being by an odd goal so Eagles were hoping for a change of fortune when they hosted relegation threatened Melksham Town A who went into the game on the back of their first win in eight games.

They again showed their battling qualities as a goal in each half earned them a 2-0 triumph over their hosts, who just can’t buy a goal at the moment.

The first half was evenly contested. Calne looked dangerous early on with both Stu Windsor and Shaun Jefferies.

Ben Macey also had a couple efforts blocked with last ditch tackles.

After 23 minutes it was Melksham who broke the deadlock when a long ball into Calne Eagles penalty area was superbly controlled by frontman Mkumbi Sokoni, who got the better of two Calne defenders before calmly firing a shot past goalkeeper Andy Windsor.

Melksham doubled their lead early in the second half when a ball into the box was not dealt by the home defence and Ben Macey fired home from close range.

Melksham were also denied a further goal thanks to two good saves from Andy Windsor.

In the final minutes both Shaun Jefferies and Karl Sharratt had half chances to pulled goal back into the game, but Melksham held firm to claim their second successive win.

Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves 1 The Lamb 2

WITH both Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves and The Lamb looking to bounce back from defeats against respective opponents Steeple Ashton and Worton & Cheverell last weekend, the pair locked horns at Wanderers, Lambrok Road base.

The hosts, who started the day in second spot, were bidding to avenge a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Richard Stevens side from earlier in the season.

But it was the visitors again who claimed the spoils courtesy of another 2-1 win that saw them move above their hosts in the standings.

Lamb led through a 15th minute goal from Bradley King-Taylor, but they were pegged back five minutes later when Cliff Sakyi scored from the penalty spot to make what was a scrappy game interesting.

Both teams huffed and puffed their way through the second period as the boggy surface made conditions hard.

With the game petering out to a draw, Lamb were awarded a penalty which Sam Stevens calmly tucked away to give the visitors a moral boosting win ahead of two potentially tricking cup ties over the next fortnight.
