CALNE 2nd demolished county rivals Trowbridge to cement second spot in Dorset & Wilts Three North.

The writing was on the wall within the first few minutes as Calne scrum-half Paul Herring swerved around desperate tackling to cross the line, prop Chris Austin converting.

A second Herring try from a tapped penalty, plus Austin’s conversion, doubled the advantage and further scores followed.

Powerful running from Mike Palfrey, Dave Holmes and Simon Hansen saw them each cross the line in the first half, Palfrey twice to effectively end the game as a contest, Austin kicking all six conversions for a 42-0 interval lead.

The second half started with Calne looking to add more points and they delivered, Andrew Pitchley scoring twice and centre Mike Cutler matching Herring’s hat-trick.

Calne try scorers were: Simon Notman, Hansen and Mike Smith also scored braces, Tom Nicholson and Matt Heggarty also crossing and Austin ending with 15 from 17 conversions and Palfrey adding another.
