BOWLS: North Wilts' Sunday best
NORTH WILTS completed a superb Sunday double as the men beat Purnell (Paulton) in the Wessex League.
And a few hours later, the mixed team overwhelmed Wiltshire rivals Swindon Westlecot in the National Top Club competition.
Last season, North Wilts men struggled in the Wessex League central section and missed out on an end of season play-off spot.
However, it is a different tale this time around having made a great start to the current campaign being unbeaten and top the section.
North Wilts made it two wins out of two with a 29 shots win over Purnell as they ran-out comfortable 104-75 winners.
They whitewashed the Paulton-based team winning on all four rinks to collect a maximum 16 points and move ten points clear of Clarrie Dunbar who were beaten by Bristol.
At home at North Wilts Billy McCay’s rink were always in charging leading 16-7 at ten ends and 26-10 at 15 but their opponents rallied to cut the final winning margin to 30-22.
Keith Fletcher’s four had a tight match early on and only led 10-9 at ten ends but then pulled away to a comfortable 12 shots win.
At Paulton, Kevin Holmes’ four led 14-7 at ten ends and this seven shots proved to be their final winning margin.
Alongside Geoff Smith’s quartet was comfortable for most of their game and led 18-11 at 18 ends. But then dropped five and a three to trail 18-19 at 20 but hit back with a three to win by two shots.
North Wilts meet Clarrie Dunbar in their next Wessex match in the central section on Sunday December 9.
The mixed team at North Wilts produced a magnificent performance to completely outbowl Westlecot in the first round of the National Top Club competition.
North Wilts thrashed the Swindon side winning in four of the five disciplines - men’s and ladies two wood singles, mixed triples and mixed fours - and only lost in the mixed pairs.
As four points were on offer for a win in all the disciplines except two wood singles which was two points each, North Wilts romped to a comprehensive 12-4 victory.
North Wilts made a flying start to the match in the singles as Janet Hardie crushed Westlecot’s Josie Lloyd, while the fours led 18-0 at ten ends and the triples 12-6 at nine.
And North Wilts kept up the pressure as the mixed fours coasted to an easy victory while the triples skipped by Billy McCay contained a Westlecot fightack to still win by four shots.
The men’s two wood singles went to Wayne Snook in a high class match against Kevin Embling. He came from 4-0 down to lead 8-5 at ten ends and win 15-11 at 21.
The only reverse came in the mixed pairs where Steve Snook and Alex Jacobs trailed Ellen Bolland and Ian Jefferies for practically the whole of their match.
They nudged in front on the tenth end with a five to lead 9-8 but were 16-11 down at 16 ends but picked up a six on the last to only lose in the end by a single shot.
North Wilts will face Bristol in the next round (last 64) on or before December 16 seeking revenge as they went out to Bristol in the Top Club competition last season at the same stage.
