DEVIZES Town put a winter of discontent behind them and kicked off 2013 with a bang as they thrashed fellow strugglers Wellington at Nursteed Road on Saturday.

Mark Love’s side had endured a run of 12 matches without a victory in all competitions – but they broke that unwanted habit with a 5-1 demolition of their Somerset opponents at the weekend.

Devizes assistant boss Justin Webster was delighted with his team’s start to the year and is hoping that he and manager Mark Love can continue to hold on to their strongest side as they look to climb the Toolstation League First Division.

“We’d been losing so many games and the most important thing on Saturday was trying to get the three points,” said Webster.

“We managed to do that and the beer after the game definitely tasted a lot better. The lads were in better spirits than we’ve seen them in a long time too.

“We were confident of winning because we had a really good side out – we’ve been bringing in a lot of good players and it’s just about getting them out consistently now.

“We’ve used more than 50 players so far this season but we want to try and get the same team out now.

“Hengrove Athletic are top of the league and we’ve drawn with them and had a narrow loss.

“We know that we can beat them and match any of the other sides in this league with our strongest team.”
