SWINDON College Old Boys head coach Mark Roshier insisted his side’s 20-14 victory over Gosford All-Blacks didn’t do them justice.

The Nationwide Pavillion side were playing their first Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier match of 2013 after last week’s clash with Chipping Norton was postponed, and they hauled themselves back from 8-0 down to claim vital league points in their chase for a place in the top two.

Charlie Grabe, Greg O’Brien and Matt McKee scored the Old Boys’ tries, in a game Roshier believes his side could have won a little more comfortably than they did.

“It was our first game since coming back for 2013, so we had been without a game for quite some time,” he said.

“I think it showed a little bit because we were ring rusty, but we have to be happy with our overall performance in the game because the wind was strong and the pitch was boggy.

“We have been trying to play at a faster pace and the conditions certainly didn’t help us, so I don’t think the game was quite as tight as the result makes it seem.

“The conditions didn’t help, but the performance was very good considering it was our first game of the year.”

Roshier has been pleased with the way Old Boys have been going about things in training recently, which has been helped by a number of players returning from injuries.

“We have a very good squad of players now which means we maybe need to start making decisions regarding selecting players for certain conditions,” he said. “Training has been really good, and we have had a number of players come back from injury too, with Greg O’Brien and Matt McKee coming back for us.

“Our back rower James McLaughlin is back too, and that is a real boost for us to have so many players available.

“We try to give as many players as possible the chance to impress in the training sessions, because that is how you get a competitive squad together.”

Meanwhile, in Dorset & Wilts 1 North a poor tackling display from Minety saw them lose 21-5 at Combe Down, while Cricklade kept up their challenge at the top of Dorset & Wilts 2 North with a routine 31-0 victory over Westbury 2nds.
