Trowbridge sprinter Abi Davies stormed to victory in the 60m at the South West Indoor Championships on Sunday.

The Clarendon College student clocked a time of 7.87secs to win the short sprint in Cardiff and finish well clear of her rivals.

Davies’ Team Bath clubmate Hannah Grubb, who lives in Hilperton, struck gold in the pole vault, clearing 3.40m.

The South West Championships were incorporated into the Welsh Athletics & Cardiff Met Uni open meeting in which several local athletes took part.

Just a week after winning the U17 men’s title at the South West Cross Country Championships 16-year-old Alex Carter smashed his personal best in the open 3000m.

The St Laurence School student from Winsley slashed 10 seconds off his outdoor best, set last summer, with a sparkling time of 8:26.45 to finish fifth overall and claim some notable scalps.

That catapults Carter to top of the early new year UK rankings for 2013.

St Augustine’s School student Emily Dixon, who lives in Frome, was runner-up in the 60m hurdles and eighth in the long jump.
