THE most predictable result of the day came in the junior boys’ race with the all-conquering Howorth twins again to the fore.

After dominating the South West and Midland Counties Championships the St Augustines’ School runners were quickly to the fore with John (14:21) extending his unbeaten start to the year with another gold and Robert just a few strides behind in second.

Cameron Perkins of Hardenhuish did well to make the podium and deny St Augustine’s a clean sweep with Henry Dixon having to settle for fifth on this occasion.

Last year the Hilperton twins, who are pupils at St Augustine’s, dominated the minor boys event but it was Robert who came out on top on that occasion.

“I’m glad to have got one over him this time. Last year, Robert was winning a lot but this year it’s been me,” said John.

Brother Robert added: “I felt I ran quite strongly and I was leading the race until we started sprinting and John beat me.”

Dixon, 13, who was also on the podium with the Howorths in the U13 boys race at the Midlands Cross Country Championships in Stafford last month, added: “It was really hard this year because we're in a new age group and it was longer than we usually do.’’

While older brothers John and Robert were finishing first and second at the Wiltshire Schools’ Championships Rory Howorth was in action in Gloucester, winning the U11 boys’ race in the Gloucestershire Cross Country League.
