SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Supermarine boss urges his players to be focused against lowly Winchester
DAVE Webb has warned his Supermarine players that they cannot afford to drop their performance levels when they travel to Winchester tomorrow.
The manager is desperate to keep his side in the Division One South & West play-off places and says a match against the second-bottom side does not represent easy pickings.
This is in spite of the fact that Winchester have only won once in the league since November 28 and are in serious danger of relegation.
“We have to treat everybody with respect,” said Webb.
“Everybody has shown that they are capable and we only narrowly beat Bishops Cleeve, and they are bottom.
“If we go there and do things properly we should be confident of getting the win we desperately need.
“It’s a game we have to try and get points in and there’s an expectation that we will win.
“But it’s not going to be easy. They are fighting for their lives and we have to earn the right to win the game. If we take it lightly we’ll come unstuck.
“After this we have three games at home and these next four games are vitally important to us.”
Webb has a full squad to choose from apart from possibly Jordan Roberts, who picked up a suspension playing for Calne in the Western League and may still be banned.
Marine suffered a 3-2 loss to Merthyr in midweek and salt was rubbed in the wound when it took them nearly three hours to get home after getting lost due to road closures.
However, Webb says that a few days’ rest will have done his squad the power of good and they will be ready for the trip to Winchester tomorrow.
“We shouldn’t be too jaded, I won’t be using that as an excuse. We should be fully recovered by Saturday,” he said.
“We’re still in a good position albeit Merthyr are closer to the top two now and I imagine they will go on and challenge.
“Our target has always been to be as high as we can, we’re still well-placed within those top five positions and we have to try and stay there.
“If you lose two or three games in a row, all of a sudden you are out of there. We have a cushion but that could disappear very quickly.”
