FOOTBALL: Calne plan tribute to 'Haggis'

CALNE Town are on the hunt for sponsorship as they look to give club stalwart Grant Paterson the perfect send-off.

Paterson, 43, affectionately known as ‘Haggis’, died of a heart attack in Scotland on February 9 and Calne are planning to organise a summer friendly against Paterson’s local non-league team, Carluke Rovers.

An ardent fan of Hearts, Paterson moved back to Scotland several years ago having been involved with Calne since the late 1980s.

“Myself and my wife went up to his funeral last Friday and we think that this would be a nice thing to do – it’s seven-and-a-half hours away though so we need some help with the cost,” said John Rumming, Calne’s vice-chairman.

“He was our chief scout, our bottle washer and even the vice-chairman for a few years. Everybody knew who he was.

“He’d stand behind the opposition’s goal at every game and shout all sort of things at our strikers but they couldn’t understand a word he said.

“He was a huge part of the club and hopefully we can take a team to Carluke this summer.”

Anyone interested in donating can contact Rumming on 07920 864879.
