HOCKEY: No scoring century for rampant North Wilts (From This Is Wiltshire)

NORTH Wilts’ storming East Central 1 campaign came to an end in spectacular style as they demolished bottom side Chippenham B 14-0.

That result took the title-winners to 99 goals for the season - which equates to a highly-impressive average of more than four a game.

North Wilts were dominant in the division with 20 wins out of 22, giving them a seven-point cushion over nearest rivals City of Bath A, who themselves won 17 games this term.

On their own patch at Dorcan, North Wilts got off to a flyer against Chippenham B with Damo Holland netting within minutes of the start.

Chris Blow finally broke his duck for the season from a short corner, before Holland added his second.

Holland then completed a quickfire hat-trick to condemn a defensively lacklustre Chippenham side to 100 league goals conceded this season.

Despite holding a lead that was nigh-on unassailable, North Wilts continued to pile on the pressure in the hope of making it to triple figures for the campaign.

After receiving a pinpoint pass from Jim Towers, Darran Cragg expertly rounded Rich Newton and beat the former North Wilts keeper at his near post.

Midfielder Towers then got in on the act, dribbling beyond three Chippenham players before finishing with a reverse stick strike.

Holland added his fourth and final goal, which was also North Wilts’ seventh, before debutant and man of the match Matthew Burgess fired first-time into the top corner.

Following the resumption a Towers pass was deflected beyond the Chippenham keeper by one of his own players and after Towers hit the post, Cragg pounced on the rebound and was able to convert a simple tap-in.

Darren Hillier added his name to an ever-growing scoresheet before Shaun Montague got the goal he has been chasing all season when he finished off a superb team move.

Towers scored his second and Hillier completed his brace, and despite having 10 minutes to find their 100th goal of the season, North could not make it a century.

Elsewhere, in Central 2, Wootton Bassett finished off their campaign with a 3-3 draw against high-flying Devizes.

All of the teams in the Davis Wood Hockey League have now completed their league fixtures.

Therefore, local players will have to wait until the various summer tournaments begin before they can gain their next taste of competitive action.

There are still fixtures left to complete in the West Clubs Women’s League, but the 2012/13 season is very nearly at a close.
