CHIPPENHAM TOWN: He's boss - for now
CHIPPENHAM Town chairman Neil Blackmore has given Bluebirds caretaker manager Steve Winter the green light to conduct his own transfer business at Hardenhuish Park.
Town saw experienced midfielder Adie Harris leave the club this week and utility man Toby Osman edge closer to a move to Bridgwater Town.
Former Bitton midfielder Mitch Tippins, who joined the Bluebirds after trialling this summer, has also headed for the exit door.
Chippenham have been on the lookout for reinforcements at the back and caretaker chief Winter has made a seven-day approach for Clevedon Town defender Sam Teale, with the club hopeful of bringing in the 21-year-old in time for Sunday’s Calor League Southern Premier Division trip to Cambridge City (3pm).
“I’ve given Steve the authority to act as the manager because there’s no point in him being the caretaker if he can’t do that,” said Blackmore.
“He keeps me updated on what he’d like to do and there hasn’t been a plan of his that I haven’t agreed with so far.
“We’ve got permission to talk to Sam Teale on Saturday and we’ve got until 1pm to sign him so we’re hoping that we can have him in the squad for the game on Sunday.”
The deadline for applications for the vacant manager’s position expired on Monday and Blackmore reiterated his desire not to rush into naming his next full-time chief.
With the players backing caretaker Winter, the chairman admits that his case was strengthened further by Tuesday night’s fine 1-0 victory at promotion contenders Stourbridge.
“It certainly worked in his favour a lot.
“He went there with a squad of 15, which included himself on the bench, and changed the system but got a fantastic win,” said Blackmore.
“All of the applications are in now and all of the directors have been provided with copies of the CVs that we’ve had.
“We’re then going to be meeting next Wednesday to draw up a shortlist from the long-list and then start conducting our interviews.
“I haven’t got a date when I’d like to make an appointment though and I’m still perfectly happy not to rush things.”
