MARLBOROUGH made an emphatic start to their bid to return to Dorset & Wilts One North with a thumping success over Avonvale in Two North.
The Common side fielded several debutants in their line-up, one of whom, Brendan Musgrave, scored an early try after strong running by fly-half Nathan Morgan.
Musgrave followed up with a superb chase and cover tackle after a midfield pass was intercepted, setting the tone for Marlborough.
The home side started to build phases of play with some good breaks being made by centre Nick Clarke and flanker Joe Mitchell, set up by another new boy Will Grant.
The second try came after 25 minutes as a long miss out pass from Mitchell to full-back Laurence Baker allowed him to draw his man and set up wing Hugh Sutcliffe to score in the corner.
Another break by Musgrave set up debutant Max Cresswell to touch down and Sutcliffe’s strong break teed up second row Shaun Anderson who was unlucky to not be rewarded with a try.
Avonvale infringed at the breakdown and Morgan took a quick penalty to score, the final touchdown of the half coming after good passing in the backs allowed wing Alex Sawbridge to set up Sutcliffe for his second.
The tries flowed in the second period as fine passing moves and team play gave Marlborough impetus playing down the slope.
There were scores for centre Clarke, second row Patrick Campbell, Mitchell, Sawbridge and a second-half hat-trick for Baker.
The try of the half involved most of the team as substitute Will Turner made a good run and an intelligent inside pass that changed the direction of the move, Clarke running clear to set up Mitchell to finish.
