Ritchings takes positives out of Premier debut
DARRYL Ritchings was able to take plenty of positives despite failing to score on his long awaited Premier League debut.
The 19-year-old was drafted into the Somerset side as a guest for their top of the table clash with Ipswich Witches on Monday night, achieving one of his major goals for the season as he looks to make the jump full-time for 2014.
Even though Ritchings finished last in all three of his rides he was on the pace and competitive throughout, and the Purton teenager was pleased with his performance in a meeting where he faced riders with Elite League experience such as Leigh Lanham and Rohan Tungate.
“I failed to score, but I was on the pace which I was pretty chuffed about it and I’m not too downhearted because I always knew it was going to be hard,” he said.
“I felt good out there although it was a shame not to take a few points but the racing was so much sharper, especially the starts, and you have to be on top of your game in every race.
“I made a good start in my first one but went a bit wide and that was it and I couldn’t pass, the bike lifted and put me in that position and I couldn’t recover.
“My second one was very tough against three very good riders, and in the last one I almost managed to pass Adam Ellis but got a little out of shape and the chance was gone.
“Having had a taster I would definitely like a few more guest bookings before the season’s out, and I feel quite confident about it.”
Ritchings is in action at Coventry on Friday evening when he competes in the British Under 19 Final.
