FOOTBALL: Calne boss relishing challenge
SIMON Gardner says that he’s looking forward to the challenge of directing Calne Town’s Toolstation League First Division campaign after he was appointed as the Lilywhites’ new manager.
Gardner, 40, had been in caretaker charge at Bremhill View since Ant Brown’s departure at the beginning of September but the former Calne player has been handed the job on a permanent basis after presiding over four victories since stepping up from managing the club’s second string Wilts Calne Town.
The new Lilywhites chief said: “There were four or five applicants with different levels of experience in for the job and the club carried out their interviews last Thursday but called me that night to offer me the job, and I was pleased to accept the role.
“It’s going to be a different challenge to being in charge of the Wiltshire League side but I played Western League football for Calne under people like Simon Hillier and I’ve had some good mentors to learn from and take things into my own management.
“I think that we’ve got some great lads and everything it takes to pull off a few surprises in this league.”
Gardner led Wilts Calne Town to the Wiltshire League Premier Division title and the Corsham Print Senior KO Cup last season.
The Lilywhites drew 1-1 with Roman Glass St George last weekend.
