TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION ONE: Lamb claim share of top spot

Both sides went into the game very understrength, with Ashton suffering from an every growing list of injuries while the Lamb had to call their Reserve team game off so they would have enough players for the clash at Whaddon Lane.

Lamb’s winner came in the first half courtesy of Sam Stevens.

Bradford United 4 Calne Eagles 2

BRADFORD United claimed their second win of the season against a depleted Calne Eagles, who are currently suffering probably their worst run of injuries since they entered the league nine years ago.

Bradford opened the scoring after 10 minutes through a neat finish from Mitchel Hamber who volleyed home at the far post following an excellent team move.

At the other end both Stuart Windsor and Josh Eades had chances to equalise but it was Bradford who struck next when Hamber got his second with another first time finish from eight yards out again after being set up by Theo Sing with only 24 minutes on the clock.

Calne got themselves back into the game right on the stroke of half time when centre back Brett Cullen headed home Danny Thompson’s corner kick to make the score 2-1.

Buoyed by their goal Calne came out in the second half and had their best period of play.

Nonetheless, after 63 minutes Bradford restored their two goal lead when Nick Gerrish superbly headed home Rich Bliha’s corner kick.

Calne were also fortunate to keep 11 players on the pitch when Brett Cullen brought down striker Sing just outside the box when he was clean through on goal, but the big defender was perhaps somewhat fortunate to get away with just a booking.

Battling Calne once again gave themselves a chance of getting something from the game with 15 minutes left when tireless winger Jake Goodwin pulled a goal back to make the score 3-2.

However, striker Phil Little made the points safe for Bradford with eight minutes remaining when he fired home from eight yards out after being set up by good play from strike partner Sing.

Castle Combe 1 Semington Magpies 2

A FOR-MATCH unbeaten run for Semington Magpies has seen Ricky King’s side move into third place in the table.

Magpies' latest success saw them defeat Castle Combe 2-1. After dominating the first half all Magpies had to show for their efforts was a 1-0 lead which was given to them midway through the half by Dan Rimmer who scored from eight yards out.

Combe made Magpies pay for those first half missed chances as Jake Dawson got Paul Sandiford’s side back on level terms with a good finish early in the second period.

With 20 minutes remaining Magpies wrapped up maximum points, Dan Rimmer was brought down in the area and Andy Harrison slotted the penalty into the bottom corner for 2-1.

Trowbridge Wanderers 3 Warminster Town Reserves 5

It was the classic game of two halves at Lambrok Road where hosts Trowbridge Wanderers had a brilliant first 45 minutes that saw them open up a 3-0 lead over Warminster Town Reserves who themselves bossed the second half as they scored five unanswered goals to claim a remarkable comeback win.

Jamie Kinchly scored the opening two goals for Wanderers and when Gavin Francis added their third, Jake Wayman’s side must have thought they were on course for their first win since they beat Castle Combe on the opening day of the season.

That wasn’t too be the case as Warminster either raised their game or Wanderers took their foot off the gas as four goal in a crazy 10-minute spell at the start of the second period turned the game on its head.

Luke McGulkin start the fightback, Cameron Allidice reduced the gap to the odd goal and it was left to James Lindsey to restore parity.

Scott James put Warminster ahead and the victory was sealed when Phil Curtis fired home to make it 5-3.
