WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Town batter Shanklin
SWINDON Town Ladies remained third in the South West Combination League with a resounding 5-0 home win over Isle of Wight side Shanklin.
The visitors nearly took the lead within a minute when Chloe Parkes took advantage of a hesitant defence to run clear, but her shot was just wide of the upright.
Town then began to get into the game and Amy Baker and Michelle Rich tested keeper Georgia Dye from range.
Although they kept the ball well, the hosts struggled to break through the Shanklin defence and attempts on goal were from outside the penalty area and off-target.
When the back line was breached, keeper Dye was quickly off her line to clear.
Town keeper Robyn Levett was tested for the first time when she saved Leanne Gibbins’ free kick just before the interval.
Following the resumption, the home side finally found their scoring touch in torrential rain.
Eight minutes in top scorer Chyna Collings lifted over Dye and moments later a Laura McGlone cross-field pass found Beth Thompson, who shot just inside the far post.
Shanklin were dangerous on the break but Town got a third midway through the half when Rich’s 25-yard drive flew into the net.
The away side were reduced to 10 players when Chloe Parkes was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident in the box and Rich converted the resulting spot kick.
McGlone completed the scoring with her first senior goal for the club in the 81st minute, when she put away Thompson’s pull-back.
There was still time for stopper Levett to make two good saves from point-blank range to ensure Town kept a clean sheet.
Town reserves triumphed 2-1 against Chippenham in the Wiltshire County Women’s League.
A goal down at the break, efforts from Sophie Jones and Hannah Attewell after the restart secured three points.
