SWINDON College Old Boys remain bottom of Southern Counties North following their 40-24 defeat to Alchester but chairman Martin Peaple was still able to take plenty of positives from the match.
The Pipers Way side led the contest for much of the first-half before slipping behind and eventually falling to defeat - although they did pick up a bonus point for scoring four tries.
Peaple believes the difference was the two teams’ kickers as the home fly-half slotted a series of difficult penalties and conversions, but despite that the Old Boys chief was proud of his team.
“We were disappointed because although 40-24 sounds a big margin it isn’t really because it’s pretty much only two scores,” he said.
“It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes of the game where the difference came because we were up for a fair amount of the first-half, and only in the last few minutes they challenged us.
“Alchester came back to within a couple of points and we looked like we could have hung on to it but it wasn’t to be.
“We’re disappointed in the result but not the performance, and the difference probably came with the two teams’ kickers.
“Our kicker, Scott Buchanan, is another one on the injured list so we were missing him, and their one kicked some really difficult conversions and three penalties which were pretty much the 16 point difference.
“Try-wise it finished five to four, so only one between us, and it was really close, but at least we get another bonus point for the four tries.”
Despite the positives to take from the performance, Peaple was once again left to reflect on a mounting injury list which once again includes Greig O’Brien.
“It’s injuries again unfortunately, same old story,” he said.
“Greig O’Brien was back on the field again but hurt his shoulder and he had to come off which meant they were able to exploit us there because they had a strong back row.
“He will probably need another couple of weeks now so we will see how it goes, the rest might help him.
“There were one or two others and Eoin Crean broke his nose like he usually does so we have some patching up to do.
“There were some plusses though because we had Charlie Drew and Alex Hill back and there are a few more on the way back too.”
