SWIMMING: Carlin to stay on in Swansea despite training centre closure

This Is Wiltshire: Jazmin Carlin Jazmin Carlin

THE training base of Wiltshire swimmer Jazz Carlin is to close at the end of the year - but the former Wootton Bassett School pupil intends to continue training there in the lead-up to next year's Commonwealth Games.

Swansea ITC is one of two intensive training centres that will shut - the other being in Stirling, Scotland - after British Swimming's Olympic funding for Rio was slashed by £4m by UK Sport.

Great Britain failed to reach an agreed medal target of five at London 2012.

However, British Swimming is to invest in Swim Wales between 2014 and 2017 in a deal that will ensure training facilities will still be available to swimmers in Swansea, although not as much support will be available.

Funding will be targeted towards athletes considered to be medal hopefuls at major competitions up until the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Carlin, who finished an agonising fourth in the 400m freestyle at the World Championships in Barcelona, said earlier this month she would continue to train in Swansea in the build-up to next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - regardless of what transpired.

The 23 year old has been named in the seven-strong Wales squad for the 2014 Games in Glasgow

At the kitting out day for Wales' Commonwealth team, Carlin said: "Swansea has great facilities and as long as I have got a pool to train in that is all I am going to be doing with the Commonwealth Games coming up.

"I have to do as many hours as I can in the pool.

"Obviously it is a worry but I have to put it to one side as I need to focus on training for the Commonwealth Games.

"I am just thankful to Swansea for the great support I have had over the last six-and-a-half years and hopefully that support can go on."
