ALAN Low believes his Royal Wootton Bassett side are finally beginning to build some momentum after their 20-13 victory over local rivals Swindon College Old Boys.

Phil Bardwell, Tucker Blinkhorn and Hamish Keith each scored tries in the away victory which sees Bassett sit eight in the Southern Counties North table and gave them two wins in a row for the first time this season.

Bassett are not in action again until they face Reading Abbey on January 4 but Low, who was forced to play in the game due to injuries, is pleased to see his team getting up a head of steam.

“It was a really tough game, especially as I had to pull my boots on and play, but it was played in a very good spirit,” he said.

“It was a hard encounter and the boys were pretty battered after because College raised their game and defended really well while we lacked a bit of execution.

“It reflected a local derby at the end of the day and it was really tough for both sides and there was some really good rugby.

“Results didn’t really go our way this week we have that momentum now which will see us carry on into the new year which is what we wanted.”

Despite not being in competitive action for a fortnight the Bassett players are still going to be going through their paces in the new gym at their Ballards Ash home.

“We are going to be in the gym training all through Christmas in a pretty good gym, which the boys are really looking forward to,” he said.

“We have a few competitions going already which is good and this is an ideal time to make the best use of it.

“We have a game very quickly in the new year so it’s going to be hard to fit training sessions in so we have to try and keep the boys going through the break and stay in good shape.

“If we can do that I’m sure we can pick up where we left off.”

While Bassett are not in action, Old Boys play their rearranged game with Drifters this weekend.
