SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Consistency key for Marine, says Taylor
MIDFIELDER Chris Taylor believes Swindon Supermarine’s new found selection consistency will hold the key to the club’s surge towards the Southern League Division One West play-off places.
The South Marston side started the season in impressive form and looked as if they could challenge for an automatic promotion spot before a loss of form, which included going the whole of November without a victory, saw them slip down the table.
Marine have lost a number of players over the last few weeks, including Rob Dean, Mani Randhawa and Danny Allen, but Taylor believes things are starting to settle and hopes they can add to their run of two straight wins when they take on Didcot tomorrow.
“The last two games have been massively important to us, not just getting the two wins but also scoring so many goals and keeping two clean sheets,” he said.
“Confidence is high at the moment and we want to take that in to Saturday and pick up another three points. If we don’t reach the play-offs the season will be a bit of a failure really, so the two wins and then hopefully another at the weekend would put us right back in the mix again.
“We didn’t win for a while but a few of the losses were in the cup, so it’s a bit misleading, but in the last few games we have had more of a settled side having missed a few players through injuries and suspensions.
“Things are starting to settle now and that’s played a big part in us getting things back on track. There have been a lot of players going in and out and hopefully that’s more settled now because having a settled team will help us I’m sure.”
While Taylor knows tomorrow’s game will be a tough one, the midfielder expects his side to begin the Christmas period with win after they beat their Oxfordshire opponents 3-2 in August.
“We played them at the start of the season and beat them away, so this is one we should be winning again to be honest,” he said.
“We need to try and relax and play our own game because if we do that we can beat every team in this league.
“There’s a few games coming up at Christmas but we take each game as it comes and switch on for each one along the way. We won’t think any further than Saturday because that’s our focus at the moment.”
