HELLENIC LEAGUE: Highworth boss still wary of the wet weather
HIGHWORTH manager John Fisher is concerned that wet weather will dash his team’s hopes of getting their Wiltshire Senior Cup quarter-final at Melksham played.
The Worthians are yet to complete a fixture in 2014 and forecast rain has put tomorrow’s last-eight clash at the Conigre in serious doubt.
A number of Highworth players would miss the game due to suspension - TJ Bohane, Brad Clark, Toby Clark, Chris Flanagan and Lewis Page - while keeper Gary Stevens is cup-tied.
Kurtis Sharkey is poised to replace Stevens between the sticks while Liam Williams is back.
However, the cup tie is in major doubt and Fisher does not think the clash will get the green light.
“They are desperate with the pitch and they called off their under 18s’ game on Wednesday night,” said Fisher.
“It has to stop raining for the game to get played but I don’t think we’ll be playing again this week.
“We just need to get a game in because otherwise that will be three weeks without anything.
“The only good thing is that a few of the players have managed to games in with their Sunday sides and at least we’ve got most of our games in. You just have to deal with it.”
Elsewhere in the competition, Purton face an away tie at Western League First Division outfit Corsham.
However, Purton defender Jamie Richards is not confident that his team will get on the Southbank pitch tomorrow.
“I’m not confident we’ll play but we are still preparing properly and it will be a good game when we do play them,” he said.
“It’s going to be 50-50 between us, we’re well-matched teams because although we play at the same level and they are lower in their league, I think their league is a bit stronger.
“They go further afield and come up against a few better teams whereas we play closer to home.
“The tactics tend to be different in the Western League. They get the ball forward quickly but then get players behind the ball when it comes back, and wing-backs tend to be used differently.
“We haven’t come up against any teams higher than us so far which has been lucky, and hopefully we can get through another round.”
HIGHWORTH will hold their 120th anniversary celebration at the club house a week on Saturday (7.15pm start).
Past and present players are welcome to attend and anyone interested should contact Fraser Haines on 07939 032451.
