SWINDON Storm are on the lookout for a new generation of players as they prepare to hold their rookie try-outs.

The club completed their first season of competitive action in 2013, having spent years working towards their goal as an unaffiliated team, with a side largely made up of players with limited experience of the sport.

Now the club are looking to bolster their squad with new talent and are holding trials on Monday, February 10 at Isambard School on Redhouse Way at 6.45pm.

The trials are open to any prospective player aged 14 or over, with no experience necessary, and the session costs only £5 with all equipment supplied.

Coach Steve Bennett has returned to the club following a spell touring Afghanistan with the RAF, which saw him miss much of last season, and believes now is the perfect time get involved in the sport, with the NFL continuing to grow in the UK.

“Its been an incredible amount of work building the team from scratch, even UK clubs often boast well over 50 members, dozens of staff and an annual turnover in the tens of thousands of pounds,” he said.

“I had a lot of fun playing rugby during my school years, but then preparation for my GCSEs took over and all sports dropped out of my life for a bit.

“My best friend and lifelong Washington Redskins fan dragged me down to a junior aged squad starting up in Plymouth and I was hooked from the first session.

“Now’s a great time to get involved with your local team. There’s a position on the field for all shapes and sizes, with the linemen physically matching rugby’s forwards to the nimble running backs with a similar stature to a scrum half or soccer player.”
