TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE A&B CUP: United blitz seals semi-final spot

IN WHAT is fast becoming a regular occurrence for teams in the Trowbridge & District League saw the weather prove to be the only winner as waterlogged pitches led to just one of the 16 scheduled league and cup fixtures surviving the elements last weekend.
The only fixture to survive saw Westbury United Reserves book their place in the semi-finals of the Briken Motors & AM Print & Copy sponsored A&B Cup with a 5-3 victory over Heytesbury at Heytesbury Park.
First division Westbury gave up home advantage but the visitors seized the advantage thanks to a first half blitz that villagers Heytesbury were unable to recover from in blustery conditions.
Westbury took the lead when Jon Price’s wind-assisted strike sailed into the net before Joe Moloney doubled the lead.
A thunderbolt from Moloney saw him net his second of the afternoon and United's third before the first half scoring was completed by Gary Tugwell, who drilled home a stunning 30-yard free kick to put Westbury seemingly in total charge of the game.
Four-nil down at the break, Heytesbury looked to be out of the tie but two goals early in the second half from Leigh Kennedy gave them a second wind.
But Westbury roared back and and killed off any hope that the second division underdogs may have had of causing an upset.
Ashley Easton found the net from the penalty spot to put Westbury back in the ascendancy at 5-2.
Heytesbury never gave up and they were rewarded for their efforts when Craig Sheppard scored their third with a spot-kick to leave them wondering whether things would have been any different had they not had a dreadful opening 45 minutes.
