FOOTBALL: Chippenham lads’ Turkey shoot

A TRIO of Chippenham teenagers have victory in their sights as they prepare to jet off to Turkey for their first taste of international action.
Fourteen-year-old midfielders Jordan Young and Callum Gunner and defender Will Christopher, 15, are all members of Swindon Town’s academy and have been picked for a week-long training camp in Antalya after being scouted by Scottish national youth team coach and former international midfielder Scot Gemmill.
The trio, who are eligible to represent Scotland through their grandparents, are part of a 22-strong squad that will play three trial friendlies with a view to making next year’s Victory Shield line-up.
Hardenhuish School pupil Young turned down a move to Premier League giants Chelsea in 2011 and dad Scott revealed that he had no idea his son qualified for a Scottish call-up.
“It’s quite strange because we didn’t actually know that he had Scottish blood in him,” said Young’s father.
“His grandad always considered himself English but his dad was in the Navy and he was actually born during a spell in Scotland, when he was only there for two days – having a Scottish birth certificate meant that Jordan qualified.
“He’s really excited because what boy doesn’t dream of representing a national side?
“We still hear rumours about people being interested in Jordan since the Chelsea thing but he’s already agreed to do his scholarship at Swindon after he finishes school.”
Gunner, who goes to Sheldon School, added: “I’ve played with Jordan since I was five or six and I met Will when I started at secondary school – that’s when he got scouted for Swindon,” he said.
“It’s really good that I’m going with some of my mates that I play with all the time.
“I’m a little bit nervous but I’m excited about going. I remember watching the final of the Victory Shield on television last year and Scotland beat England in the final and it would be great to play in it next year.”
The trio fly from Edinburgh to Turkey on Saturday morning.
