TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Lacock take title with games to spare
JOE Martin and Martin Bradfield’s Lacock went into their game at home to Westbury Town needing just a point to secure the Division Two title and the first part of a possible quadruple.
As expected, Lacock who have dropped just four points from their 13 games to date maintained their unbeaten record to date and clinch the title thanks to a 19-0 victory over a very depleted Westbury Town side who played the game with just eight players.
Darrin Moss top scored with a five timer, Mark Coles and Craig Burge scored three apiece, Sam Hodsell and Simon Gray netted twice with singles from Sam Thomson, Jake Marshall, Kevin Hodgkinson who scored from the penalty and Joe Martin who drove home the goal of the game from 35 yards made up Lacock’s 19.
Bratton 1 Westwood News 2
PROMOTION hopefuls Westwood United rolled up at Leighton Sports Centre, Westbury, to take on basement side Bratton thinking that they already had the game won.
But a spirited performance form Dave Griffin’s hosts made their guests work for what in the end was a hard fought for 2-1 victory that keeps Mark Hurkett’s side in the hunt for the other automatic promotion spot along with Lacock.
Westwood opening the scoring through Josh Maguire who raced through and eventually planted the ball home after a mistake in the Bratton defence.
The hosts fashioned themselves an equaliser that saw Neil Gordon thunder home a stunning 35-yard free kick that tied things up at one apiece.
The second period saw Westwood get on top of their host without really creating many clear-cut chances but the one that they did get saw Maguire grab his second of the game when he flicked the ball in after another defensive lapse midway through the second half to earn his team three valuable points in the promotion race.
Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves 2 Bradford United Reserves 0
MATT Rusling’s Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves completed their league programme with a 2-0 victory at home to Bradford United Reserves.
The win may have been Wanderers' ninth of the campaign but with 29 points it means that Rusling’s side are likely to finish the season in fourth place in the standings.
After a goalless first half Wanderers took the lead on 50 minutes when Mark Hunt scored following a Mike Ritson corner to claim his first goal for the club.
Wanderers wrapped up their victory in the 60th minutes with Will Bayley latching onto a Nathan Olasz long ball to fire home for 2-0.
Worton & Cheverell 0 Trowbridge Town Reserves 1
A 3-1 WIN for Worton & Cheverell at Trowbridge Town Reserves back in October gave the villagers one of their four victories to date which is just one of three losses for the Bees have suffered this term.
So when the sides met at West Lavington they knew they wouldn’t be in for an easy time against Paul Sperring’s side but unlike the first meeting it was Trowbridge who took maximum points courtesy of a 1-0 success that keeps them in second place in the standings.
Their three-point advantage over Westwood may not be enough to clinch them the runners up spot as the newsmen have a game in hand on Dave Jenkins side who complete their fixtures this weekend.
Dan Barnett scoring the winner for Trowbridge with a delightful lob on 27 minutes.
