A THIRD home win in a row for Pewsey lifted them from the bottom of the table, where they were replaced by Saturday’s opponents.

Vale’s unlikely escape bid from the drop zone remains intact, although wins in their final three matches are a must to stand any chance.

Calne started strongly and most play was in the Pewsey half for the first quarter.

Pewsey contained the visitors and the flow of play gradually turned their way.

The first score came after 25 minutes when hooker Nick Damper went in for a try following a Pewsey surge for the line.

From the restart Pewsey rushed forward and the passage of play ended with fly-half James Haynes powering over to touch down, scrum-half Tom Taylor adding the extras.

Pewsey were now in the ascendency and ten minutes later Haynes was in for his second, Taylor’s conversion attempt at goal hitting the upright.

Pewsey once again charged forward after half time and Taylor landed a penalty.

Vale powered onwards and within three minutes lock Mike Paddick was in for the bonus-point score.

Calne came out determined to do better and a sweeping movement secured their opening score.

A yellow card to prop Tom Baish, followed ten minutes later by one to Haynes let the visitors in for two further converted tries.

At 25-19, with ten minutes to go, and Pewsey restored to full strength, tiring Calne hit by a break by flanker Olly Spence.

He demolished the first line defence allowing number eight Phil Vallis to take the offload and try.

Haynes completed his hat-trick, ploughing through the cover to score under the posts, Taylor converting.
