SECOND Division Westwood News are the third side through to the semi-finals of this season’s EJ Shanley & Sons-sponsored Spring Cup after they defeated third division outfit Trowbridge Rangers 5-1 at Bobbins Lane to set up a meeting with either Lacock FC or United FC for the chance to play Trowbridge Town or Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves in the final later this month.

Westwood made the perfect start to the cup tie and were one up inside five minutes when Josh Maguire headed in from close range.

Westwood doubled their lead from the penalty spot, Maguire was upended in the area to win the spot kick which duly tucked away by Harry Hamlin to make it 2-0.

Maguire, who was finding himself at the heart of everything Westwood did, netted his second of the afternoon and the hosts' third in bizarre circumstances on 22 minutes when he charged down a clearance in midfield and the ball bounced back over the head of the Rangers keeper.

Trowbridge Rangers won a penalty of their own just before the interval and Dan Moore stepped up to reduce the arrears with a cool finish from 12 yards.

Rangers started to come back into the game at the start of the second half, and their hopes of a comeback were boosted when Westwood had Maguire controversially sent off on 60 minutes.

Despite the numerical disadvantage Westwood regrouped and they added a fourth through defender Rich Jones who now playing upfront hooked home a brilliant fourth for the home team.

Charlie Powell’s struck a quality finish to give Westwood their fifth, after spotting the keeper of his line he side home from 20 yards for 5-1. Rangers also finished the game with 10 men after they had Jake Cooper sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
