CORSHAM and Chippenham both celebrated landmark victories at Dorset & Wilts finals day at Salisbury RFC on Sunday.
While Chippenham carried off the U12 prize for the third year in succession there was also a superb victory for Corsham, who completed their triumph with a perfect record of three wins from three and no tries conceded.
The competition saw the best two Wiltshire teams pitted against their Dorset counterparts in a round-robin format.
Corsham kicked off with a hard-fought last-minute try to win their opening game against Oakmeadians 1-0.
Getting into their stride, Corsham dominated North Dorset in their second game, winning 2-0 to set up a decider with Chippenham who had won one and drawn one of their opening two matches.
Corsham produced the performance of the day to roar into a three-try lead by half time and, despite Chippenham’s efforts, they were unable to breach their opponents line.
Their defensive feat was matched by Chippenham’s U12s, who also kept a clean scoresheet throughout their tournament.
Against Dorchester, Ben Stephen and Tom Lewis created the platform for Archie Stanley to crash over for the game’s only try.
It was a similar story in the second match against Wimborne, where Chippenham’s defence shut down Wimborne’s scoring chances. In the second half, Lewis superbly caught the kick-off and Stanley continued the move, before scrum-half Tom Griffiths and Tom Hathaway combined to send Elliott Ayliffe up the touchline for the winning score.
Last year’s U11 Dorset & Wilts champions Salisbury stood in the way of Chippenham and the title, but they took the lead as Lewis started and finished a move that also saw Harry Johnson, Ben Butcher and Ben Stephen drive forward.
As Chippenham started to dominate, a superb run by Oscar Stephens ended with Salisbury conceding a penalty which allowed Lewis to cruise over for the second try.
Chippenham U12s started their Tri-Nations Tour, which takes in games in England, Wales and Ireland, today.
Corsham U11s: Joe Swain (skipper), Arthur Farthing, Ed & Angus Bollen, Alex Croker, Jonty Manson, Connor Hulbert, Sam Bressington, George Elkins, Harry Turner, Harry Kernan, Ben Robertson, William Arrowsmith, Ross Buchanan, Henry Phillips, North Goodwin, Hugo White and Tommy Gould.
Chippenham U12s: Archie Stanley, Oscar Buckley, Charlie Mullin, Tom Lewis, Henry Hyland, Tom Cowan, Ben Stephen, Ben Butcher, Harry Turner-Johnson, Matthew Harding, Tom Griffiths, Tom Hathaway, Jack Atkin, Morgan Parry-Williams, Arthur Kitching, Elliot Ayliffe, Alex Christopher, Eddie Tomlin, Oscar Stephens, Tom Pickford.
CHIPPENHAM’S U13 and U14 teams go for Dorset & Wilts Cup glory this weekend, both sides taking on Wimborne at Devizes RFC.
Six Chippenham players have been selected in the final 25-strong Dorset & Wilts U14 squad.
Five of them – second row James Utton, back rows Connor D’Aubigny and Harry Sutherland, fly-half Alexander Mackenzie and centre Gregor Morton – will start the match against Somerset at Bath’s Rec on April 24 (6.45pm), while hooker Oliver Clements is on the bench.
