CORSHAM and Chippenham both celebrated landmark victories at Dorset & Wilts finals day at Salisbury RFC on Sunday.

While Chippenham carried off the U12 prize for the third year in succession there was also a superb victory for Corsham, who completed their triumph with a perfect record of three wins from three and no tries conceded.

The competition saw the best two Wiltshire teams pitted against their Dorset counterparts in a round-robin format.

Corsham kicked off with a hard-fought last-minute try to win their opening game against Oakmeadians 1-0.

Getting into their stride, Corsham dominated North Dorset in their second game, winning 2-0 to set up a decider with Chippenham who had won one and drawn one of their opening two matches.

Corsham produced the performance of the day to roar into a three-try lead by half time and, despite Chippenham’s efforts, they were unable to breach their opponents line.

Their defensive feat was matched by Chippenham’s U12s, who also kept a clean scoresheet throughout their tournament.

Against Dorchester, Ben Stephen and Tom Lewis created the platform for Archie Stanley to crash over for the game’s only try.

It was a similar story in the second match against Wimborne, where Chippenham’s defence shut down Wimborne’s scoring chances. In the second half, Lewis superbly caught the kick-off and Stanley continued the move, before scrum-half Tom Griffiths and Tom Hathaway combined to send Elliott Ayliffe up the touchline for the winning score.

Last year’s U11 Dorset & Wilts champions Salisbury stood in the way of Chippenham and the title, but they took the lead as Lewis started and finished a move that also saw Harry Johnson, Ben Butcher and Ben Stephen drive forward.

As Chippenham started to dominate, a superb run by Oscar Stephens ended with Salisbury conceding a penalty which allowed Lewis to cruise over for the second try.

Chippenham U12s started their Tri-Nations Tour, which takes in games in England, Wales and Ireland, today.
