Fish won’t do favours for a friend

HIGHWORTH Town manager John Fisher says he will not do any favours for his friend and Wantage Town boss Gary Ackling when they clash at the Elms tonight.
With Wantage currently leading the way in Hellenic League Premier Division, Fisher knows that this meeting could have a big say on where the title ends up this term with second-placed Ardley United taking on Ascot United, who sit in third, this evening.
“Out of the teams challenging for the title, it is Wantage I want to do it as I’m good friends with Acko (Gary Ackling),” Fisher said.
“I don’t think that the fixture list has done them any favours, to be honest I think they have had the short straw.
“Acko also lives in Highworth so it will be even worse for him if we can beat them.
“I hope that he is not expecting any favours though, we want to win this match and we will be going all out to do that. I’ve virtually a full squad available and because we haven’t played for 10 days we should be pretty fresh.”
The Worthians will be without Lewis Payne for the game against Wantage, who come the Elms on the back of 6-0 thrashing of Newbury, as he serves a three-match ban.
However, Fisher’s side will be boosted by the return of ‘keeper Gary Stevens as he has recovered from a knee injury.
Wootton Bassett Town’s hectic April shows no signs of letting up as they head to basement boys Abingdon Town.
Bassett have already played five matches this month prior to this evening’s trip and that will be followed by a journey to Brimscombe and Thrupp on Thursday night in the semi-final of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup.
Jeff Roberts’ men were already making to trip to the Stroud Valleys for a league fixture on Thursday, that has now been rearranged for April 30. Meanwhile, Shrivenham will look to celebrate securing their Premier Division status by beating Brimscombe. Sam Collier’s side will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Binfield.
