BMX: Phillips is a cool customer

This Is Wiltshire: Jamie Phillips Jamie Phillips

LANGLEY Burrell youngster Jamie Phillips is backing himself to beat the nerves when he competes in the BMX World Championships for the third time.

Phillips, 11, who is a pupil at Kington St Michael School, represented Great Britain at the 2012 championships in Birmingham before also riding last year in New Zealand, and is now gearing up to take on the world again in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in July.

Phillips, who competes for Bristol BMX club, will hit the track at the 15,000 capacity Ahoy arena in the U11 age group after qualifying based on his top-12 finish in last year’s national series and says he is looking forward to performing on the world stage once more.

“I’m pretty confident. It’s still scary but I’ve done it before so it’s not too bad,” said Phillips, who finishing fifth in his qualifying event in New Zealand last year.

“Because it’s in Rotterdam this year, there’s going to be a lot more people competing this time. It’s going to be a much bigger turnout.

“But I think that I can do well. I’ve had a pretty good season and got some good results, so I want to be challenging.

“I’ve also been riding a new bike – I got it at Christmas and it’s been great so far.

“Last year was difficult but going to New Zealand was a really good experience.”

Dad Gary, who is a member of the Bristol club’s committee, added: “Carrying on getting good results in the national series has shown that Jamie is doing well and being able to qualify for the Worlds again has just been a nice little carrot to dangle.

“It’s going to be tough for him because there’s going to be around 1,200 riders there but we’ll see how he does.”
