PROUD Danny Talbot is taking in the view from the top of the 200m summit after cementing his place as the country’s number one with a show-stopping victory at last weekend’s Sainsbury’s British Championships.

The 23-year-old stormed through the wind and rain at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, beating fellow Great Britain stars Adam Gemili and James Ellington as he crossed the line first to clinch his first national outdoor title in 20.42, just 0.04 seconds off his personal best.

The Trowbridge Tornado, who will represent England in the 200m at this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, beat second-placed London 2012 teammate Gemili by 0.19 seconds and is now on the hunt for medals at the Commonwealths and August’s European Champ-ionships in Zurich.

Talbot, who was controversially overlooked by Great Britain for last year’s World Championships, is second in the European rankings behind French ace Christophe Lemaitre, but is refusing to get too carried away despite the biggest win of his career so far.

“It feels like a huge win and it’s right up there with when I won a medal at the Europeans (Talbot won bronze in 2012, in Finland),” the new UK 200m champion told the Wiltshire Times.

“It was really nice to spend two weeks planning for a race and then go out there and execute that race.

“I thought that Adam Gemili and James Ellington would be quicker round the bend but I’ve worked hard on that and I came out a lot closer to them than I thought I would.

“I’ve been training pretty much like a 400m runner for a long time and I’ll back myself on the straight, which is what I did.

“Being top of the rankings is one thing but I don’t think that you can call yourself the British number one until you win at the British Championships.

“Times all happen on different days and who’s to say that one of the other guys wouldn’t have run faster than I did when I ran my PB in Prague (on June 9)?

“My aims this summer were to do well at the British Championships, qualify for the Europeans and do well there, and do well at the Commonwealths too.

“It’s a big boost to get a win like this in the first big event and it was nice to get all of the attention and messages on social media, but I need to concentrate on what’s next and get straight back into training.

“Hopefully, I can be competitive for even more medals this summer.”

Talbot, who trains at the University of Bath under coach Dan Cossins, will compete at the Glasgow Grand Prix Diamond League event next Friday before joining up with the England squad for the Commonwealths.
