DANNY Talbot's place in Great Britain's squad for next month's European Championships in Zurich was confirmed today.

The inclusion of Talbot, who is preparing to run for England in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, was largely a formality after the Hilperton sprinter won the national 200m title in Birmingham in superb style earlier this month.

The 23 year old former St Augustine's Catholic College pupil, will be joined at the distance by James Ellington and Adam Gemili, whom he beat to the British crown, in a 74-strong British squad, a year after he was controversially overlooked for the team for the World Championships in Moscow.

Talbot, who currently lives in Box with his family home in Hilperton, ran 20.36 in Prague last month, a personal best and way inside the qualifying A standard of 20.55.

That was the fastest time by a British male this season until Gemili overhauled it with 20.20 with a considerable following wind in Germany shortly after the national championships.

Former world champion Dai Greene, who lives near Melksham, has been selected to compete in the 400m hurdles despite failing to achieve the required qualifying time.

British Athletics Performance Director Neil Black said: "The fact that there were so many tough selection choices reflects on the depth and strength we have in some events this summer.

"There is an expectation for members of this team to be winning medals or challenging hard at the top end in their finals with youngsters coming through from junior ranks and our experienced medallists performing as strongly as they have in previous years.

"I'm genuinely excited as to the strength of the team headed for Zurich and looking forward next month's championships in Switzerland."
