RACING: McCoy toasts new landmark

This Is Wiltshire: Tony McCoy Tony McCoy

TONY McCoy grabbed the headlines on Saturday as he surpassed Martin Pipe's total of career winners with his 4,192nd success aboard It's A Gimme in the Betfred Summer Plate at Market Rasen.

McCoy, based in Baydon near Marlborough, and his old mentor had enjoyed plenty of banter about the competition in recent years but the Ulsterman ensured bragging rights were his as the Jonjo O'Neill-trained It's a A Gimme (2-1) repelled stablemate Lost Legend.

McCoy said: "The record was just a very personal thing between me and Mr Pipe. He set the standard and revolutionised training. He is someone I held in high esteem and we had great times together in my time as his stable jockey.

"We've had a bit of banter pretty much since I've ridden my 4,000 winner."

He added: "I've had a good start to the season, now I want to ride my fastest-ever century and to be champion jockey again - if I'm lucky enough to do that it will be my 20th year. That's my main target at the moment."

McCoy soon made it win number 4,193 when scoring on Parlour Games for John Ferguson in the B Eyre & Son Ltd Ford Novices' Hurdle.
