World Cup winner PK is still on a high

This Is Wiltshire: Peter Kildemand Peter Kildemand

NUMBER one Peter Kildemand goes into tomorrow night’s meeting at Poole still on a crest of a wave after helping Denmark to World Cup glory at the weekend.

The 24-year-old scored seven points to help his side to victory in the final at Bydgoszcz, but it was Niels-Kristian Iversen who was the last-gasp hero as he rounded Pole Janusz Kolodziej in the final corner of the last race of the night to steal the crown from the hosts by a single point.

Such is the life of a speedway rider, Kildemand and his teammates were not able to celebrate their victory for long before their focus switched to Polish league racing the following day, but the Robins number one is still glowing from what he and his team’s achievement.

“It was amazing because coming away from my first World Cup with a gold medal is exactly what we dreamed of and it was an amazing night,” he said.

“Niels rode a superb race (to pass Kolodziej to win the meeting) and we were all watching from the pits and went mad when he passed him.

“We went back to the hotel and had a few beers but we had to be up early to ride on Sunday in Poland, but it was great to be able to celebrate.”

Kildemand returns to Robins action against Poole tonight as the Robins go in search of a play-off place, with the Dane convinced they have a real chance of making the post season.

“We need to get as many points as we can at Poole and then with our home matches we need to win them all, but we have a chance,” he said.

“Poole are a good team so it’s going to be difficult down there but we can all ride the track okay and if we can get a bonus point at least then I think that will be alright for us.

“The matches (against Coventry) are the ones we need to win and if we do that then we really have a good chance because they are looking at the play-offs too.

“I think we can do it but we need to win all our home meetings and get as many points as we can away from home.”
