HORSESHOE amateur boxing club have been asked to stage this season’s ABA Senior Novice quarter-finals.

The Gypsy Lane club will stage the Western Counties against London section of the tournament on October 11.

Horseshoe will also be hoping to have two fighters of their own involved with Jack O’Reilly and James Townsend entered.

The pair know that they will have to box two or three times to reach this stage.

Club coach Brian Roberts said: “They have been hard at work in the gym and putting extra hours in and they are capable of getting there.”

There will be at least 16 bouts, of which the first bout is due to start at 2pm.

Doors open at 1pm, Horseshoe boxers supporting bouts start at 5.30 pm. when another 8 bout will take place.

Meanwhile, the club have kept busy with two boxers successfully completing a young leaders boxing course.

This year’s summer camp saw the club take 10 boxers to Waterworld, South Cerney, where they took part in various water activity's and paint-balling, enhancing companionship, independence and team work.

The boxers are now back in full training, and the club have around 25 boxers in the gym preparing for the coming season.

In October, Kayden Connolly will join the Western Counties that will travel to Guernsey.

The following month will see the new ABA Junior Novice Championship begin with Samual Vallice, last season’s Horseshoe boxer of the year, and George White.

On Novemver 21, Horseshoe will pay tribute to one of Swindon's most renowned boxing figures Ricky Porter.

It will be Horseshoe’s first Dinner Show and its a tribute to honour the former Southern Area welterweight champion.

Also attending is former world champion John H Stracey, who Porter boxed for the title back in April 1972 at the York Hall in Bethnall Green.

The dinner show will be held at Stratton's Grange community centre, there a book signing by both Porter and Stracey, an auction, as well as 10 Horseshoe boxers in action.
