OLD Town United put last weekend’s crushing defeat at the hands of Village Inn behind them to beat Spectrum 4-2 on Saturday.

Chris Wood’s side got off to the worst possible start in the Swindon and District Football League Premier Division as they lost away 12-2.

However Old Town started much more brightly in this outing and were three goals to the good after 20 minutes.

Spectrum did fight their way back into the tie with goals either side of half time but player-manager Wood finished the game off with 20 minutes to go.

“It was good after the crushing defeat we had last week. It was a must win for us and we really needed to bounce back,” said Wood.

“For the first 20 minutes we were really on top of the game and got the goals.

“The team played well and it is always good to get your first win in the league.”

Wood opened the scoring in spectacular fashion for the home side when a ball was played over the top and he was able to volley it in from 35 yards out with his back to goal.

Wood then turned provider five minutes later when he was released down the left wing crossed the ball in and Jack Duffy was in the box to tap the ball home.

The striker was again involved when he set up Ben Roberts to score the third, but the visitors pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 before half time.

After the break Spectrum scored a second to reduce the deficit to one but Wood got his second of the game to round off the scoring.

“It was very special, I didn’t know how to celebrate so I just stood there,” said Wood about his first half strike.

“To be fair even when we lost the week before I scored from just over the half-way line.

“I started this season in the same sort of form that I ended last year which is good from a personal point of view.”

Elsewhere in the league Avtar Construction continued their winning start as a brace from Shane Hibbert added to a goal from Kelvin Spencer to secure a 3-0 home win.

In the only other game in the top division Sportz Central beat Swiss Chalet Rangers 4-2 away from home.

KS Miltax are the early leaders in Division One as they followed up last week’s 6-1 win over Bassett Bulldogs to beat Redhouse 4-1.

Maciej Chneilik got a brace for the visitors to add to goals from Bartosz Glowacki and Jakub Bedrich, while Adam Law got a consolation goal for the hosts.

Ramsbury also maintained their 100 per cent record as Georgian Radulescu netted a hat-trick to beat Bassett Bulldogs 3-0 away.

Chiseldon were the other winners on Saturday as they travelled to North Swindon.

A brace from Stuart Cody and goals from Ibra Jagne and Jake Squire wrapped up a 4-0 win.

Meanwhile Swindon Spitfires and The Clifton played out a 2-2 draw after Spitfires missed two penalties in the tie.

Phil Lagace and Joshua Archer scored for the hosts while goals from Brendan Shaw and Gregory John ensured a share of the points.
