SWINDON Spitfires United secured all three points with an impressive 6-0 win over Swindon Town development at the weekend.

Spitfires started brightly and went close on several occasions before opening the scoring on 16 minutes against a young Town side. The opener came after Sandra Hughes-Higgins corner fell kindly for an unmarked Zofie Stepien, who easily headed home.

Despite heavy pressure, Town’s ‘keeper kept her side in the game, as United’s second didn’t come until the 40th minute as Mel Bristow made a decisive run on the right wing before finding Georgia Leonard, who slotted in at the near post.

In the second half Town rarely tested the United defence and only came close once, forcing Shona Hanlon into a decent save.

United’s own perservance did pay off though. Bristow again making a good forward run through the visitor’s defence and leaving the ‘keeper stranded with her strike to take the tally to 3-0.

The fourth came on the 76th minute as Lisa Curtis pass found Claire Morton, who held the ball up before blasting home.

Stepien’s second came in the 77th minute following a goal mouth scramble that fell to her to power in.

United rounded off the scoring six minutes from time as Rachel Eley found Hughes-Higgins who calmly lobbed the ‘keeper.

Spitfires entertain Melksham Town next week, looking to end the table-topper’s 100 per cent record.

Meanwhile Spitfires’ development team were on the wrong end of a 5-1 score-line at Melksham Town Blacks.

The home team took an early lead from a corner that curled directly in and they rattled in a further four before the break.

Spitfires were more resilient in the second half and were rewarded when Charlotte Robinson was upended by the home ‘keeper to allow Cara Costello to notch a consolation from the penalty spot.

Highworth Town Ladies maintained their own winning run as they beat Frome Town 2-0 at home.

Vanessa Eve had to be sharp to punch away a strike to prevent the visitors taking the lead.

Marina Claus put her team ahead after a Sarah Rayworth’s tempting ball across the six yard box for Mariana Claus to finish.

Frome almost came back into it in the second half. Eve denying their Frome striker’s shot from just outside the 18 yard box again.

Claus extended her side’s advantage after neat interplay from Highworth’s central duo Kerry Walklett and Hannah Dalgleish led to Claus stealing in behind the Frome back line to score.

Frome did not give up till the final whistle but Highworth’s strong back line held firm.
